I am Richard McSwain. I discovered my passion for architecture and design at an early age. I was fortunate to take a trip to Europe with my family when I was only 10 years old. I was fascinated by the cathedrals and castles that I saw, and knew that I wanted to create something that would have a lasting impact on people and the world.
Starting in high school I worked with Busy as Bee LLC to flip houses in northern Colorado. I value that experience very much because it taught me a lot about construction, and provided me a wonderful foundation to build upon with my architectural education.
I graduated from the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2009. While I was a student I began working as a self-employed contractor and took on the remodel of my own home. I started with a complete kitchen remodel in my second year of college much to my roommates’ surprise – we washed our dishes in the bathtub for quite a while and ate a lot of fast food. From there I also remodeled my deck, bathrooms, and basement. You can see these projects featured in my SketchUp and Complete Projects Galleries.
Since graduation in 2009 I have been seeking employment at an architecture firm, but architecture jobs are pretty scarce at the moment. To keep myself busy I continue to design and build small projects. In February 2011 I made it official and started MC Squared Design Studio in Boulder, Colorado. I have been fortunate to work on a range of projects with MC Squared Design Studio, but I am still hopeful to gain employment at an architecture firm soon. My strengths include SketchUp 3D modeling, Photoshop, swinging a hammer, and getting stuff done. This summer I worked with Habitat for Humanity as crew leader to gain LEED project experience. I am now qualified to sit for the LEED Green Associate exam, and I hope to do so in the near future.
On a personal note, I married my awesome/beautiful/lovely/smart wife, Tessa, in 2010 and she has been putting up with me for 9 years now- whew! We love living in Boulder, CO- it’s like being on vacation year-round. When we are not working, or posting on this portfolio we love to ski, play tennis, travel, and camp in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
I hope you enjoy my work, and continue to come back to see more projects as they are added to the galleries. Please feel free to pass on my info to anyone hiring in architecture or needing a design/build company to complete any home projects. You can download my PDF portfolio and resume on this site as well.
